Wholesale Foreign exchange markets are only accessible to Banks and large Hedge funds, not to Companies, nonprofits or individuals directly. In order to exchange currencies you are dependent on Banks and Fintechs who are often one or two steps removed from the original wholesale market price. These Banks and Fintechs apply margins to the rate you are offered (most often a non-transparent margin) making foreign exchange more expensive than it should be and often times unfair (particularly when exotic currencies are involved where margins can be in excess of 10%).
